It's quite uplifting to find that so much has been preserved about the life of the Reverend TS King. When I started learning and writing about him in the early 1990s, I don't think there was much, although he was the first person I knew who had two mountains named after him--one in New Hampshire, the other in California. I have a wonderful picture taken of yours truly staring at Mt Starr King in California on July 4, 1976 at 6:00 AM on the last day of a five-day backpacking trip.
Little did I know then that I would be writing a historical biography of the life of Albert Bierstadt to whom King was friend, mentor and guide. King's personality and presence dominates the first chapter of my book when he takes young Bierstadt to New Hampshire and tries to get him to commit to a life as a lansdscape artist.
Then, too, King's comment in his letter about Yosemite about waiting for an "artist-priest" to come to California to capture the awesome beauty of Yosemite was actually a public plea to Bierstadt to come to him in California, which he did two years after the letter was written.
My book will not be completed for another 3-4 years, but I will give you the title: THE HEROIC JOURNEY OF ALBERT BIERSTADT: ARTIST-PRIEST OFTHE WEST.
